Cute Shroom and Bug Bento

Today's double bento have sausage patties, zucchini and assorted other veggies: cucumber, tomato, purple cauliflower. I also included more kabocha cooked a different way: I sliced 1-inch wedges and steamed briefly until just fork-tender, then pan-fried in the sausage drippings to get a crispy edge. You don't need to add anything else; it's totally yummy as is! They both get more sliced fall plum and a few pink apple pieces as well. MisterMan's cute touch is a mushroom made from satsumaimo and Okinawan purple potato, with nori and pink carrot details.
TinySprite's cute touch is a bug face made from satsumaimo, nori and pink carrot, and pink heart picks. Awww, so cuuuute. Haha! ^_^

Check out What's For Lunch: there are quite a few!

  6. I have to try pan fried kabocha, I just made some simmered, though at first I was wondering if the end result would be worth the effort behind the rind LOL (it was!).

I love the huge variety of produce that you have. We live in Los Angeles County but surprisingly it's hard to find real variety. What new and unusual we get comes from the CSA produce we get every week.

This was rather long-winded. Sorry bout that. As usual you have made a couple of awesome and yummy looking bentos!

  8. Thanks Mommyof2girlz and KidsDreamWork! Yes, I thought of caterpillar too, with the extra sausages.

    Kim,
You can do almost anything to kabocha and it tastes good. The nice thing about this squash is that the rind seems tough at first but it's really very thin so it cooks quickly. And since it has such a nice flavor on its own you don't have to add much to it. I saw a recipe for risotto and it looked really good.
I'm surprised there isn't more variety in L.A. Maybe at Mitsuwa or Nijiya?
I appreciate your thoughtful comments; thanks a lot! :D
