Rocket Chili Bento

Rocket Chili Bento, originally uploaded by sherimiya ♥.
Chili and rice always makes me think of Zippy's, where as a kid I always ordered it until someone pointed out that if you order the chili cracker instead, you get more chili. So true. So I did change my order after that, but always regretted missing out on the perfect chili and rice combo. I added turkey frank to this one for fun. The rice batch is a mix of brown, pearl barley, cracked wheat, quinoa, lentils and oats. it's a nice, chewy and substantial mix that the kids seemed to like pretty well. The other side of my LunchBots contains sliced white nectarine (underneath), mango plums, strawberry, grapes, steamed broccoli and pink carrot stars. Did you notice the space theme? I made a little rocketship from a slice of cheddar with orange and purple carrot detail, and the pick on the other side is an alien boy. You may recall that my boy doesn't do "raw" cheese, as he calls it -- he prefers it melted, and won't eat cheese sticks either. Well, I didn't mention it, and he ate it. Woo!

  1. Oh I love this one Sheri! I love the rocket, the stars.. the rice. Everything. But especially the rocket and stars. Haha, raw cheese. Never heard it called that way. Good for you on not mentioning it to your boy!

  2. Oh yay! I recall when you found the space-themed cutters. "Raw cheese" LOL. Kids say the funniest things.

I love Zippy's chili and would always buy those fund raiser coupons.

  3. So sweet; thanks a lot Chantale! His words: raw cheese. Up to now, it had to be MELTED to be acceptable. Go figure.

Thanks Debra! Me too; Zippy's fundraisers are always big moneymakers. King's bread and hulihuli chicken too!

  8. hmm, never heard of zippy's, maybe that's a west-coast (or even hawaii) thing? chili was always served with rice in my house, so it just seems like a natural combo to me :-)

LOVE the space theme - cute pink carrot stars, and you always have such a knack for simply crafting very identifiable (and kawaii) objects like apples, fish, etc. this rocketship is no exception, and my favorite part is the purple carrot "window"!

  10. Thanks Lia, Yenny, karaimame, OhayoBento, megan, Mommyof2girlz, and veganf!

OhayoBento, mixed grain rice is the quickest and easiest way to increase the nutrition in each meal; that's why I do it so often! Hope you can try too.

megan, yes, Zippy's is a Hawaii thing. I think everyone has their go-to Zippy's order, and the chili is famous, heh. Someone once ordered their haupia cake for my birthday :)
