Little Tebasaki Drummettes Bento

I haven't made tebasaki (salt grilled chicken wings) in a long time, and the kids love it (see the method and recipe here). Usually I use a mix of drums and wings, or the entire wing, but I could only find the drummettes this time. They're kid- and bento-sized, and I was happy to see them fit in this box so perfectly. I made TinySprite a little rice "cupcake" with furikake and a baby radish "cherry", plus some lightly steamed broccoli and purple carrots on a skewer. The removable container holds more carrots, a few homegrown tomatoes, pluots, and a little Okinawan sweet potato bear shape. Just right!

  1. As I started to prepare obento for my kids, I have even more respect to you. Maybe one day I will get used to it, after making 1000 bentos (haha) but at this moment, it's hard to wake up, it's "some" work necessary, and hard to cook more dinner (so I can have leftover). So much for just lunch box, huh. But maybe I'll be smarter and can handle it one day like you. Some days I just make sandwiches and take a break but I know he prefers eating rice. You make obento so effortlessly!!! :)

    1. Nami,
I make sandwiches too! They are just kids, after all, and they love sandwiches too. Yours are lucky that they have a well-balanced and delicious dinner waiting for them when they get home; they know their bento will be something tasty that will remind them of you during school. They are they lucky ones!
      Thank you dear!

  3. You have probably answered this question before, but forgive me. Where do you get your purple carrots?

    1. I find them at the farmer's markets as well as the natural food markets. I think you can grow them by seed as well.

  4. I can't wait to try this recipe! Question--if I need to cook it early in the morning for bento, do you think it would be okay if I placed it uncovered in the fridge overnight? Then in the morning I could broil it. Or do you recommend I cook it the night before?

    1. If you have time to cook in the morning, you can do that, but remember to leave enough time to let the food cool down before you pack it. It's not safe to pack warm food in a box that may condense during the day. I find it easier to cook the night before. It won't be as fresh, but the great thing about chicken is it's delicious at all temperatures! Hope this helps :)
